Deportivo La Coruña vs Elche Prediction: Can Depor Start La Liga Return With a Win?

 

There is something special about a club returning to the top flight after years away, and that is exactly what makes Deportivo La Coruña vs Elche such an interesting way to begin the new La Liga season.

Deportivo are back where they believe they belong. Eight years after their last appearance in Spain's top division, the Galician club will walk out at the Abanca-Riazor on Monday night knowing that the occasion itself will be almost as important as the result. Elche, meanwhile, are also back in La Liga and arrive with a new manager, a rebuilt squad and plenty of questions to answer. 

Kick-off is scheduled for 9:00 PM in Spain, which is 8:00 PM Nigerian time, at Riazor.

Deportivo La Coruña: A New Chapter Begins

Deportivo's journey back to La Liga has not been straightforward.

The club fell from the top flight, dropped as far as the third tier and spent years trying to rebuild its reputation. Last season, however, they finished second in La Liga 2 and finally secured their return to the elite. 

Now comes the difficult part.

Getting promoted is one thing. Staying in La Liga is another.

Antonio Hidalgo knows that better than anyone. The Deportivo boss has already admitted that his side will have to suffer at times this season and learn to handle the pressure that comes with competing against stronger opposition. He has also spoken about the need for the team and supporters to remain united. 

The club clearly believes in him, too. Deportivo recently extended Hidalgo's contract until 2028 after he guided them back to the top flight. 

There is also a major new weapon in the squad.

Aubameyang Brings Experience

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is probably the name that will attract the most attention on Monday night.

The 37-year-old striker joined Deportivo from Marseille on a two-year contract after scoring 14 goals in all competitions last season. He has played for Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea and Marseille, and his experience at this level is something Deportivo's younger players simply cannot manufacture overnight. 

But Deportivo cannot simply expect Aubameyang to solve everything.

Their success this season will depend on whether Hidalgo can create a balanced side around him. The team needs to defend well, compete physically and avoid being dragged into open games against opponents with more individual quality.

At Riazor, though, they have a chance to start positively.

Elche Have Their Own Problems to Solve

Elche are also entering the season with plenty of optimism, but their situation is slightly different.

They have changed managers, with Martín Anselmi taking over after Eder Sarabia's departure. Anselmi has arrived with a clear footballing philosophy built around possession, intensity and an aggressive approach to the game. 

That sounds good on paper.

The question is how quickly the players can translate it onto the pitch.

Elche have also been busy rebuilding their squad. Among the new arrivals are players such as Fer Niño, Javier Morcillo and Facundo Buonanotte, while the club has also strengthened in other areas. 

That creates both excitement and uncertainty.

A new coach and a number of new players can eventually produce something very good, but the opening weeks can be messy while everyone learns their roles.

And there is another concern.

Elche will be without Yago Santiago and Grady Diangana, who have been ruled out through injury, while captain Pedro Bigas has had fitness concerns but was training with the group before the match. 

That could make their opening-night challenge even tougher.

Deportivo vs Elche: Where Could the Game Be Won?

The midfield battle could tell us a lot.

Elche under Anselmi are expected to want the ball and control the rhythm of the game. That could force Deportivo to decide whether they want to press high or sit slightly deeper and attack the spaces left behind.

Personally, I think Deportivo will be happier without having to dominate possession.

Their biggest advantage is the environment.

Riazor should be bouncing for this one, and Deportivo can use that energy to make the opening 20 or 30 minutes uncomfortable for Elche. If they score first, the entire dynamic changes.

Elche would then have to come forward, which could give Aubameyang and Deportivo's attacking players room to run into.

That is the scenario Hidalgo will want.

The Aubameyang Factor

It would be impossible to preview this game without returning to Aubameyang.

The striker is no longer the player who terrorised Premier League defences every weekend, but writing him off would be a mistake.

His movement remains dangerous, particularly against a defence that is still learning how to work together.

More importantly, Deportivo don't need him to score 25 goals.

They need him to produce the important moments.

A goal in a tight home game. A clever run that creates space. A bit of experience when the match becomes chaotic.

If he can give Deportivo that, the signing could prove extremely valuable.

Head-to-Head and Recent Form

There isn't much value in relying too heavily on old head-to-head meetings here because both teams have changed significantly and Deportivo have spent years outside La Liga.

Elche's recent top-flight experience gives them a small advantage in terms of knowing what this level demands, but Deportivo have something Elche cannot replicate: the emotion of returning home to the top flight.

Elche also finished last season in La Liga and avoided relegation, while Deportivo's challenge came from the second division. That difference in recent experience should not be ignored.

It could come down to who handles the occasion better.

This is where I think Deportivo have the edge.

I'm not expecting a comfortable home victory. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Elche make life very difficult for them, particularly if Anselmi's side are able to establish possession early.

But I keep coming back to Riazor.

Deportivo have waited eight years for this moment. They have a manager who knows the squad, a motivated home crowd and a striker with the experience to make the difference in a close game.

Elche, meanwhile, are still figuring out what their new identity looks like.

That makes me lean towards the home side.

But when the match gets tight in the second half, I fancy Deportivo's home advantage and Aubameyang's experience to make the difference.

And if Deportivo do get that first goal, don't be surprised if Riazor turns this into one of those nights that supporters remember for a very long time.
